Hikers trapped on dune couldn’t go up or down, until Michigan firefighters arrived
Two people who got stuck during their hike on a dune in Michigan were rescued by firefighters, according to authorities.
On Saturday, April 23, two hikers on the Treat Farm Trail, about 150 miles north of Grand Rapids, were “cliffed out” — meaning they could go neither up nor down — on the dune face, according to Glen Lake Firefighters.
Firefighters said the hikers became stuck about halfway between two trails.
Firefighters and National Park Service rangers rappelled 200 feet down to reach the two individuals, then fitted them with harnesses to help them climb back up the dune, according to a news release.
Authorities said both rescuers and hikers reached the top of the dune without injury.
Dune rescues become more frequent during the summertime as climbers feel dehydrated or fatigued quicker, firefighters said, adding that rescues involving rope and technical equipment are much rarer.
