A 27-year-old man is accused of stabbing his girlfriend about 30 times after an argument in Surprise, Arizona, police say.

Raymond Maltos called 911 on Feb. 6 and said his 21-year-old girlfriend was bleeding and had about 30 stab wounds, police said in a probable cause statement.

Police said they responded to the call and detained Maltos, who reportedly said “I just couldn’t stand her anymore,” as he was leaving the scene.

The woman was found with wounds on her legs and fractures on her head and hands, police said. She was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Maltos told police he went to see his girlfriend because she was struggling with her homework. When he tried to comfort her, he said she mocked him and was “rude” to him.

Police said a “violent rage” took over him like a “dream,” and Maltos and his girlfriend got into a physical fight near the front door.

He grabbed a knife from the kitchen and struck the woman with it multiple times until it broke, police said. He then grabbed a second knife and continued stabbing her with it until it also broke before slashing her with a “handcrafted” knife he made, police said.

Maltos said he stopped when his girlfriend said “babe stop” and he tried to help her, police said.

He was charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, endangerment and disorderly conduct.

His bail was set at $250,000.
