Citing the lingering impact of the weekend storm, the Wake County school board switched Tuesday’s policy committee, work session and regular board meetings from in-person to online meetings. The three meetings won’t be streamed live on YouTube.

Initially, the only way for the public to catch the discussion as it happens is to call into a number to hear the audio. But on Tuesday, Wake also added a link where people could access the meetings on Microsoft Teams.

Wake says the meetings will be recorded and posted afterward on the district’s YouTube page.

“This was not ideal,” school board chair Tyler Swanson said in an interview Monday. “I know the inclement weather has impacted quite a bit – not only this board meeting, but our retreat a couple of months ago. So hopefully this will be the last little bit of snow that we’ll see.”

Wake announced the decision to cancel the in-person part of Tuesday’s meetings on Friday ahead of the storm that would drop several inches of snow on the county. Schools were closed Monday.

Meetings won’t be streamed live on YouTube

Wake also held virtual-only school board meetings during the early part of the pandemic in 2020.

Someone would need to be in the board control room in Cary to broadcast the meeting streams live, according to Lisa Luten, a district spokesperson. But Luten said no one will be there due to concerns about traveling the roads in the icy weather.

“Certain parts of the county may be fine, but we have board members who travel all over the place, as well as staff,” said Swanson, the board chair. “And so just out of safety precautions, this was the safest and best option for us.”

School board members will use Microsoft Teams to hold the virtual meetings. Luten said the call-in number for the public should be able to handle as many people who want to listen to the meetings.
