Extra security is at Broughton High School in Raleigh on Tuesday a day after a student was found with a gun during lunch.

In an email Monday, Broughton Principal Janiece Dilts told parents the school had received a report from Raleigh Police during its first lunch period that a student was found in possession of a gun off campus.

During their investigation, Dilts said officers found the weapon among the student’s belongings. This student will be disciplined in accordance with Wake County school policies and may also face legal consequences, according to Dilts.

“Law enforcement continues to investigate this incident,” Dilts said. “Out of an abundance of caution, there will be additional security on campus tomorrow.”

On Tuesday, Broughton announced it was on a Code Red lockdown due to a “potential threat.” Raleigh police posted on X, formerly Twitter, that it was investigating a reported active shooter but said, “There is no active shooter.”

Dilts encouraged parents to emphasize to students that they should feel comfortable in talking about situations that cause them concern. Dilts also urged parents to keep firearms safely stored to prevent minors from gaining unauthorized access to weapons.
