Four bus routes serving students in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools don’t have drivers Thursday morning, school officials said.

The affected routes and schools are:

  • Bus 56: Rashkis Elementary, Culbreth Middle, Carrboro High
  • Bus 66: McDougle Elementary, Culbreth Middle, Carrboro High
  • Bus 253: Smith Middle
  • Bus 257: Culbreth Middle, Carrboro High

School officials are asking families to consider alternative arrangements for students Thursday morning or to call the district’s transportation office at 919-942-5045 to have a bus come and pick up their kids.

The scheduled bus will begin picking up students going to the schools after 9 a.m.

Students will not be considered late to school due to the bus shortage. School officials have not confirmed if students need to have alternative transportation in the afternoon.

The school system is still dealing with a bus driver shortage that has affected routes at different times throughout the school year.

In early November, two routes going to five different schools were without drivers for a day. Bus 56 was one of the ones without a driver then.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools said they have “exhausted our list of available substitutes and qualified staff who assist us” to deal with the bus driver shortage.

Buses can be tracked through the “Here Comes The Bus” app at www. chccs.org/transportation. To find the bus, you need your student’s schools ID and district code.

This is a developing story.
