Read the full document from UNC’s settlement with Nikole Hannah-Jones
After reaching a settlement with journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones over the university initially not offering her tenure in her hiring last year, UNC-Chapel Hill has released the full settlement document.
The latest update in Hannah-Jones’ tenure saga and the settlement comes less than a week after the university first confirmed that a settlement had been reached, and days after Hannah-Jones released more details about the settlement on Twitter.
The document, released by UNC media relations via email on Thursday morning, confirms both the details that Hannah-Jones shared on social media and the sum of money included in the settlement, both of which were previously reported by The News & Observer.
The settlement was for less than $75,000 — $74,999.99, to be exact. At that level, any settlement reached by public universities in the state for less than $75,000 is able to be approved under the sole authority of the university’s chancellor, according to the UNC Policy Manual.
The settlement also includes three provisions mostly related to improving diversity and supporting people of color at the university.
Additionally, the settlement says that Hannah-Jones may not “apply or reapply for employment with UNC-CH for a period extending through January 1, 2028, whether as a direct employee, a temporary or leased employee, independent contractor or otherwise.”
