The American Association of University Professors, a national faculty group, investigated the UNC System for violations of standards of shared governance, threats to academic freedom and institutional racism.

The AAUP investigation committee found governance failures across campuses in the system and highlighted several controversies at UNC-Chapel Hill. The report details “damaging political interference by elected officials, the Board of Governors, campus trustees, and the executive administrators who report to them.”

The UNC System criticized the report for inaccuracies and a “relentlessly grim portrayal of one of the nation’s strongest, most vibrant, and most productive university systems.”
