A Raleigh elementary school’s teachers were the top in the US. See what they did.
A Raleigh elementary school led the nation in having the most new teachers achieve the “gold standard for teacher excellence” this year.
Barwell Road Elementary School in Raleigh had 10 new teachers complete the rigorous process this year to receive their certification from the National Board For Professional Teaching Standards, according to results released Monday. It’s part of a trend where both Wake County and North Carolina lead the nation in this certification process.
“I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication that our teachers have put forth into the process of becoming Nationally Board Certified,” Tammy Carey, principal of Barwell, said in a news release. “As a school leader, I believe that investing in our teachers and supporting their professional growth is essential to student success.”
North Carolina now has 22,653 of the 125,875 teachers certified in the U.S., according to the new results. Statewide, 22.6 percent of teachers are nationally board certified.
Wake County had the most certified teachers of any district in the nation, with 2,921. Wake has led the nation for 14 consecutive years.
Wake also led the nation with 158 newly certified teachers. North Carolina had the most newly certified teachers of any state at 1,421.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg ranked fourth in the nation with 2,241 certified teachers.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Orange County and Wake County are among a group of school districts which made the NBPTS list of nationally accomplished districts for having at least 20% of their teachers being certified.
North Carolina has historically led the nation in the number of certified teachers, in part because it comes with a 12% annual pay raise from the state.
It costs $1,900 in fees to get certified, and North Carolina provides low-interest loans to teachers to help them go through the process.
