Unveiling a new logo? Then you’d better have a thick skin.

First it was the North Carolina logo, then the Raleigh logo, and the Charlotte logo.

People are so judgy about logos.

It wasn’t any different Wednesday when the UNC System unveiled its new branding, which features a chunky, geometric-looking North Carolina shape, in deep blue, with 17 sides to signify the state’s public campuses. Its colors, and white star with yellow “NC,” mimics the state flag. On social media, the new look elicited cheers, jeers and a flurry of jokes.

UNC President Margaret Spellings introduced the new logo Wednesday with a flourish, whisking a tarp off a sign in front of the UNC System’s headquarters in Chapel Hill, where the system’s General Administration staff has long been based. But don’t even say the words “General Administration” to Spellings. That moniker is dead to her. And to ensure that it will not be named, Spellings placed a “swear jar” in the lobby. Anyone who says it by accident has to slip in an IOU.

The branding effort has been under way for months, and it cost about $250,000, Spellings said.

Here’s a sampling of reaction on social media Wednesday:
