A Garner man was arrested Friday after he allegedly injured his child to the point the toddler needed life-saving surgery.

Kiran Netha Pasunuri, 44, is charged with two counts each of intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, as first reported by the Facebook page Fighting Crime News and Who’s Wanted.

Pasunuri is accused of injuring his 2-year-old June 2, causing a “massive subdural hematoma” and hemorrhaging of the retinas, according to the arrest warrant.

Those injuries required “life-saving surgery” at WakeMed, where surgeons had to remove a portion of the child’s skull, the warrant states.

The toddler also suffered from compression fractures to several vertebrae. Compression fractures occur when a break in the vertebra causes it to collapse, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Pasunuri is also accused of not seeking proper medical care for the child; it’s not clear how long the delay between the initial injury and the child’s hospitalization was.

Court documents don’t specify how Pasunuri allegedly injured the child or why the charges were not filed until Thursday.

Pasunuri remained in jail with his bail set at $200,000 secured as of Friday evening. If released, he may not have contact with his child.
