A man shot by Wake County sheriff’s deputies early Tuesday morning remains in critical condition, while a deputy who was injured has been treated and released from the hospital, officials said.

Deputies responded just before 2 a.m. after 911 calls reported a man threatening to kill himself in the 200 block of Benar Drive, near Raleigh, according to a news release from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. .

Three deputies were dispatched and found a man with a gun who fired at them, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies fired back, striking the man an unknown number of times. The man, 32-year-old Brian Jacob Monroe, was taken to the hospital by Wake County EMS with serious injuries.

The SBI did not say how the deputy, whose name was not released, was injured.
