2nd teen charged with murder in fatal shooting of 17-year-old in Durham

Durham police have arrested and charged a second teenager with murder in the December killing of a 17-year-old on South Roxboro Street.

Police responded to the shooting around 11 p.m. Dec. 17, 2024, and found the 17-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The teen was identified as Terrick Strudwick Jr. by media outlets and a GoFundMe online fundraiser for his family.

On Thursday, police announced that Shyheem Bowens, 18, of Durham, has been charged with murder and felony conspiracy to commit murder in the case, according to a news release. He was arrested Wednesday night and is being held in the Durham County Jail.

A 16-year-old, Corinthian Isaiah Poole, is also charged with murder and felony conspiracy in Strudwick’s killing, according to CBS17 and online court records. He was arrested the day after the shooting, according to his arrest warrant.

The shooting happened at the Cornwallis Road public housing community, CBS17 reported.

“It makes your heart stop beating,” the boy’s father, Terrick Strudwick Sr., told the station. “Just to wonder where would he be in life, the potential to see him grow cut short.”

There were 220 people shot in Durham last year, 34 of them fatally, according to the Durham Police Department’s website

Twenty-seven of the total number of people shot were, like Strudwick, 17 years old or younger, the statistics show.
