A man crashed a stolen tow truck into a store in central Apex, capping off a Saturday morning crime spree in dramatic fashion.

The crash caused serious damage to the shop, Apex Coin & Currency, located at 703 E. Williams St.

Police photos show the truck plowed through the front window and slammed into the back wall, crumbling bricks and cinder blocks and tossing guns and other merchandise outside. The bed of the truck was left hanging out of the front of the shop.

Police said the tow truck was stolen from the inspection center next door.

The suspected driver, whose identity police are withholding “pending further investigation,” is also accused of two assaults that began at the gas station on the corner.

One of the victims was seriously hurt, police reported.

The Apex Fire Department said nobody was inside the coin shop during the crash. Town officials condemned the building because of the structural damage.

Police arrested the suspected driver at the scene and charged him with two counts of strongarm robbery; two counts of assault, one inflicting serious injury; larceny of a motor vehicle; and injury to property.
