Three injured in Chatham County after man shoots into vehicle. But it wasn’t road rage.
A man was arrested and three people were left with non-life-threatening injuries after the man allegedly fired shots into a vehicle Friday evening in Chatham County. But the incident was not a case of road rage, as authorities originally suspected.
Friday around 6 p.m., deputies responded to a report of three gunshot victims at a gas station located at 107 New Chatham Road in Siler City, according to a news release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.
The victims were taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Further investigation on Saturday revealed that the shooting occurred at 17025 Highway 902 in Bear Creek, where deputies executed a search warrant and found evidence connected to the shooting, according to the release. That address is the residence of Michael Darren Sharpe, 46, whom deputies arrested in connection with the shooting, the release said.
Sharpe is charged with seven counts of felony discharging a weapon into a motor vehicle, three counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, four counts of misdemeanor assault by pointing a gun, one count of felony assault inflicting serious injury and one count of misdemeanor injury to personal property, according the news release.
Sharpe is being held on a $1 million secured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 6, 2025, in Chatham County District Court.
The sheriff’s office provided no information on the identity of the victims or their conditions. It offered no information about possible motive for the shooting, and did not say if Sharpe and the victims knew each other or were related.
