Police charge man with murder of 65-year-old found shot to death in Durham

A man was found shot near Durham Technical Community College on Sunday morning and later died.

Police on Friday said they have charged a man in the fatal shooting of a 65-year-old man on Sunday.

James Edward Lyons, 44, has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of 65-year-old Darryl Keith Harris of Durham.

Officers responded to an alert from ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection program, in the 600 block of Troy Street near Durham Technical Community College shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday.

They found Harris, who was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, according to a news release.

Police have released no information about a possible motive or provided no other details in the Sunday killing.

Homicides in Durham are up in 2023

Where does violence stand? Total reported violent crime in Durham is down this year, but homicides are up and approaching the city’s possible record 50 homicides in 2021.

There were 45 reported homicides as of Nov. 25, according to the latest data on the Police Department’s website.

That compares to 40 homicides by that date last year and an average of 41 homicides by that date over the last five years.

With at least three homicides reported in Durham since last week, that makes 48 homicides in the city this year.
