Cary woman charged with murdering her two daughters makes 1st court appearance
A Cary woman accused of killing her two young daughters made her first court appearance on the charges Monday afternoon.
Launice Shanique Battle, 29, in a blue and white jail jumpsuit, said only her name during the brief hearing and was appointed a public defender.
She is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children, ages 3 and 2.
If convicted of the crimes, she would face life without parole or the death penalty, said Superior Court Judge James Ammons, who presided over the hearing.
Call from Raleigh hospital
On Saturday night, Raleigh police responded to a call about two deceased children at Duke Raleigh Hospital on Wake Forest Road at 9:38 p.m., according to a Raleigh Police Department news release.
The release did not say how the girls died or provide additional information.
Battle’s criminal record includes a pending court hearing on driving while license revoked and a history of past driving-related convictions, according to court documents.
Battle is due back in court on Sept. 19. She is being held without bail in the Wake County jail.
