Durham police identify teen found shot to death in car on US 15-501

Durham police have released the name of a young man who was killed on U.S. 15-501 Tuesday night when he was shot from another car.

He has been identified as Jeremiah Tobias Dixon, 19, of Durham., police announced Wednesday.

Police responded to the shooting on U.S. 15-501 North near Pickett Road and found the teen shot inside a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary information indicates Dixon was traveling northbound on the highway when shots were fired from another vehicle also traveling north, according to a Durham Police Department news release.

Police did not release any other details, such as whether investigators think the occupants of the two cars knew each other or whether it was a possible road rage incident.

In April, a shooting near the same area reduced rush-hour traffic to one lane on U.S. 15-501 South, The News & Observer reported. At least one person suffered serious injuries from being shot in what was described as a possible road rage incident.

Tuesday night’s investigation closed that section of the highway until early Wednesday morning.

Shooting injuries, deaths up in 2022

There had been 110 people shot in Durham as of June 11, according to Police Department statistics. That was up slightly during the same period from each of the last two years.

Of those, 20 people had been killed, also up from each of the previous two years, the statistics show.
