Police arrest Durham suspect after 1 killed, 1 injured in apartment complex shooting
A shooting suspect who barricaded himself inside a Durham apartment for hours Thursday has been charged with murder after one person was killed and another was injured, police said Friday.
Police arrested Erick Ray Hudson, 26, of Durham around 10:30 p.m. Thursday after surrounding his apartment for over six hours, then entering the residence to take him into custody.
Hudson is charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He is currently jailed without bond.
Durham police said Friday that when they arrived at Lakemoor Apartments at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, they found 22-year-old Emily Montes de Oca and an unidentified 27-year-old man had been shot.
Montes de Oca, of Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police said Hudson, Montes de Oca and the man knew each other.
In a press briefing after 7 p.m. on Thursday, Police Chief Patrice Andrews said Hudson was still barricaded inside the apartment building, located in the 300 block of Avon Lake Drive in south Durham off of Martin Luther King Parkway.
“We don’t really know what this person has to do with the entire incident, but we do know that the person is related to what has happened today,” Andrews told reporters. “So this is definitely one of those very active, evolving situations that might go a little while longer.”
Around 10:30, the police department’s Selective Enforcement Team entered the apartment and took Hudson into custody. The team handles situations with hostages and barricaded subjects.
Police previously “did respond to some shots fired in the area,” Andrews said. Police said Friday afternoon that the Avon Lake Drive shooting was unrelated to others in the area.
Officers asked residents to keep their distance from building 330, and many apartments were evacuated.
Police officers were seen hiding behind cars with guns drawn and investigators were at the scene, reported ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.
“The building is surrounded. We need you to come out with your hands up,” police said over loudspeaker while trying and get a barricaded suspect out of the apartment before 7 p.m., according to a tweet by an ABC11 reporter.
Witnesses told ABC11 that they heard at least eight or nine gunshots and that someone shot at another person in a parking lot from a balcony.
A police K-9 officer was deployed to the scene.
