‘I had to shoot this man’: Garner police release murder suspect’s 911 call
Garner police have arrested a 59-year-old woman they say shot and killed a 32-year-old man she was dating.
Peggy Sylvania Yarborough has been charged with murder, according to a Garner Police Department news release.
Douglas Delquan, 32, was shot and killed around 9:15 p.m. Sunday at 152 Annotto Bay Lane, police said.
Yarborough and Delquan were dating and lived together at the address, according to the release.
‘Nobody in that house is safe’
Officers said they had responded to a call earlier that evening at the house, but that no crimes had been committed.
In the first of three 911 calls that evening, a caller asked police to remove Yarborough from the house.
“Nobody in that house is safe,” the caller said, adding they believed both people were armed.
“She needs to be removed from that house, and she needs to be brought over here,” they said. “They’re definitely going to have a dispute at that house.”
The call came after a verbal argument between Yarborough and Delquan, according to a copy of the police report.
Officers said in the report that Yarborough was not home when they arrived, and that Delquan said he did not want her to return that night.
When officers spoke to Yarborough, she said she had a gun and would use it if she felt threatened, police said in the report.
At 9:12 p.m., a neighbor called authorities to report hearing three or four gunshots while taking out the trash.
It had been less than 15 minutes since police left the scene, the caller said.
Two minutes later, Yarborough called 911 to report the shooting.
“I had to shoot this man,” she said. “He launched at me.”
Yarborough said she didn’t believe he had been armed.
“He came toward me, and yes I shot him,” she said. “He didn’t think I would shoot him.”
“I’m so scared,” she said.
