Clayton man out of hospital and in jail after murder-suicide attempt, sheriff says
A Clayton man has been charged with murder in the May shooting death of a woman with whom he had children, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Terrance Laquan Scott, 27, was charged following his release from WakeMed after he attempted to commit suicide May 2.
He is accused of fatally shooting Jasmine Nicole Upsher, 23, of Green Level in a “domestic incident,” according to a sheriff’s office news release. They had two small children together, said Eric Curry, a spokesperson for the office.
On May 2, deputies responded to reported gunshots near Garner. Witnesses said shots were fired from inside an SUV at an intersection on U.S. 70 before a woman was pushed out of the vehicle, a release from the sheriff’s office stated.
Scott drove about 500 yards east before he crashed into a median. He shot himself and was taken to WakeMed, the release stated.
Curry said the two children are with other family members now.
Scott is being held in Wake County Detention Center without bail.
The sheriff’s office has investigated seven homicides this year, up from six in 2019.
Since 2008, the only year in which more homicides were reported to the sheriff’s office was 2014, when eight homicides were reported, according to FBI crime statistics.
