3 injured in drive-by shooting in Durham. Nearly 200 people shot in the city this year.
Three people were injured in a drive-by shooting near N.C. Central University’s campus Thursday night, bringing the number of people shot in the Bull City this year close to 200, according to Durham police.
Around 8:40 p.m. multiple people in a dark-colored Dodge Charger opened fire on four people in a white Honda Accord on the 200 block of Pekoe Avenue, a police watch commander told The News & Observer
The incident happened in a residential area that borders a campus parking lot.
Three people in the Accord were shot and have injuries that don’t appear to be life threatening, the watch commander said.
Reported shootings have increased in recent weeks, police spokesperson Kammie Michael wrote in an email.
As of Aug. 22, more than 189 people had been shot in 158 incidents in Durham this year, Michael wrote.
Twenty of the incidents involved more than two people who were shot, she wrote.
The police department has developed new initiatives, including increased visibility in areas experiencing shootings, she wrote.
“The department’s recently centralized Violent Crime Task Force will focus specifically on shooting cases, i.e. aggravated assaults, robberies with a weapon, etc.,” she wrote.
The task force will work closely with investigators from other units, she wrote.
