Report points to suicide in UNC-Chapel Hill student’s death

A student found dead in a UNC-Chapel Hill dorm room last weekend apparently died by suicide.

A police incident report on the student’s death characterized the incident as a “death investigation by hanging.”

On Saturday, Dec. 2, Winston Crisp, vice chancellor for Student Affairs, sent a letter to the community through the Alert Carolina system informing them about the death of a Hinton James Residence Hall resident.

The student’s name was not released.

“The information we can share is limited,” Crisp wrote. “However, it is important to know that no suspicious circumstances are reported and at no time was there danger to the Hinton James or greater campus community.”

Support from Counseling and Psychological Services was made available to students.
