Who’s running for office in Durham, Orange and Chatham counties? Races become competitive as more file

A challenger emerged this week in the Carrboro mayoral race, and Durham City Council ward races are becoming competitive as 12 people are seeking three spots.

Carrboro resident Mike Benson is challenging Mayor Lydia Lavelle, who will seek her third term as Carrboro’s mayor this year. Lavelle also served on the town’s Board of Aldermen from 2007 to 2013. Benson is the former owner of The Station, a Carrboro restaurant and bar that closed in 2015.

In Durham, City Councilman Steve Schewel filed to run this week, joining Pierce Freelon and Farad Ali, who filed last week. Farad served on the Durham City Council from 2007 to 2011. Freelon is a hip-hop artist and activist who has not held a public office.

The men are vying to replace Mayor Bill Bell, a 16-year veteran who announced earlier this year that he will not seek re-election.

Other candidates also filed this week for a spot in Durham, Orange and Chatham municipal and school board races, which will be decided in the Tuesday, Nov. 7, general election. Durham also will hold a municipal primary race Tuesday, Oct. 10.
