Durham County commissioners return leadership team for another term

The Durham County Board of Commissioners has re-elected Wendy Jacobs as their board chairwoman.

Commissioner Heidi Carter nominated Jacobs, who was re-elected unanimously.

“ I will just say thank you to my board, it’s an honor to serve as chair,” Jacobs said. “I will continue to work as hard as I can on behalf of all of you.”

Jacobs’ first action after her re-election was to nominate James Hill as vice chairman, and he was also re-elected unanimously. Hill did not comment about his re-election during the meeting.

Jacobs was re-elected to the county commissioners in 2016 and is in her second term. She is a graduate of Duke University.

Hill is serving his first term as a county commissioner. He was elected in 2016.

The other two commissioners are Ellen Reckhow and Brenda Howerton.

The county commissioners set policy and approve the county’s annual budget. The fiscal 2017-18 budget totals $633 million and included a a 2.75 cent per $100 property-tax-rate increase. The total budget rose 8.21 percent over last year, while the general fund budget rose 4.92 percent over last year.
