Durham police confirm officer hurt in UTV accident

A Durham police officer was injured while riding a utility terrain vehicle Tuesday at the Durham Police training range here.

The incident happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. on a gravel road at the range, located at 7615 Cassam Road in Bahama, Durham police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said in a news release.

The accident happened when the UTV ran off the side of the road and overturned. The officer, who was on duty at the time, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment, Michael said.

The officer, who has not been identified, is in stable condition, she said.

The Durham Police Department firearms training facility is located on roughly 20 acres adjacent to Lake Michie. The accident is being investigated by the police department’s Traffic Services Unit, which is standard protocol, Michael said.
