Just as schools get ready to set thousands of kids free for summer vacation, the city is nixing its recreation center and pool fees for kids 18 and under.

Beginning Thursday, June 1, Durham youth will be able to use the city’s recreation centers and pools for free.

City Manager Tom Bonfield included the elimination of fees for youth 18 and under in his 2017-18 budget, which is for the fiscal year that starts July 1. However, the City Council voted in May to allow the change to go in effect June 1. The last day of classes for the Durham Public Schools traditional schools is June 9.

The change eliminates the up to $3 cost of a daily activity pass for youth and teens 17 and under to use the city’s recreation centers. It also eliminates their $2 fee paid to get into outdoor pools and $4 to get into indoor pools.

Previously residents 18 and older were charged adult fees of up to $4 to enter recreation centers and $4 for outdoor and indoor pools.

Rhonda Parker, director of Durham Parks and Recreation, said the free admission is an expansion of a series of free programs for teens that the department has been offering for years.

“We just have a greater commitment to offer more,” Parker said.

To utilize the facilities, parents need to register online with Durham Parks and Recreation, said Cynthia Booth, a spokeswoman for department. Register at DPRPlayMore.org.

If you don’t have access to a computer or a smartphone, you can register at one of Durham’s recreation centers.

Fees for non-city residents, instructional classes, athletic leagues and other programs will remain the same. Sliding scale fees based on income continue to be available for after-school, summer camp, intersession and other activities.

Here is a list of the city’s recreation centers, pools and spraygrounds.
