Chatham County officials are investigating after a submerged car was pulled from Jordan Lake on Friday.

A fisherman discovered the early-2000s Nissan Maxima Tuesday through sonar, according to a news release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle was found in about 30 feet of water near the U.S. 64 bridge, which the sheriff’s office described as “a well-traveled area frequently used by boaters and anglers.”

In a video posted to TikTok two days ago, Kyle Farwell said he discovered the car. Farwell owns Farwell Fishing, a fishing guide service offering trips on Jordan Lake.

“We’re on Jordan Lake right now and we just found a car fishing a bass tournament,” Farwell said in the 23-second video, which also shows a sonar image of what appeared to be a vehicle.

Deputies responded to the area after the initial discovery but didn’t find any indications of a recent crash, the release said. There also had not been any recent reports of missing drivers.

Deputies returned Friday with members of the Durham County Sheriff’s Office dive team, who confirmed the object was a car. Barnes Towing removed the Maxima from the water, according to the release. No occupants were found inside.

“This isn’t something we see every day, especially in such a popular fishing spot,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson in the release. “We’re grateful to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office for their dive support and to Barnes Towing for helping bring the car safely to shore.”

Investigators will examine the car to deduce how long it has been underwater and if it may be connected to any incidents or reports, the release said.
