A caller “advised something just exploded,” according to a 911 dispatch report, and smoke and flames were visible. Callers also reported seeing a woman leave the house and hearing a child screaming, according to the 911 calls, but no one was trapped inside.

Fire crews from Chapel Hill and Carrboro also responded to the fire, along with Chatham County Sheriff’s Office deputies and N.C. Highway Patrol officers, who helped divert traffic from the heavily traveled commuter corridor.

Firefighters had the blaze under control just before 6 p.m., and electric and gas utility crews were on the scene to help North Chatham Fire Department investigate the cause of the fire.

The story will be updated.
