A 12-year-old girl has died from her injuries after she was pulled from the water in the Neuse River on Tuesday, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday morning.

“On behalf of the entire Wake County Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family,” Sheriff Willie Rowe said in a release. “Please keep all who have been affected by this tragedy in your prayers.”

Deputies responded to the area of the Neuse River Greenway and Loch Raven Parkway about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, after witnesses reported seeing a swimmer who fail to resurface after going under the water.

The girl, whose name was not released, was pulled from the water by the time first responders arrived, the Sheriff’s Office said. She was taken to the hospital for treatment with life-threatening injuries.

Officers from the Raleigh and Knightdale police departments and Wake County EMS responded to the scene, according to the release.

The investigation into the incident remained ongoing as of Wednesday morning.
