Emergency crews in Chatham County recovered the body late Sunday of a teenage swimmer who went missing during a Fourth of July outing on Jordan Lake.

“Our hearts are with this young person's family, friends and loved ones during this very difficult time,” Sheriff Mike Roberson said in a news release. “We are grateful to the many agencies and personnel who dedicated their time, expertise and resources throughout this search.”

The teen, whose name was not released, struggled in the water while swimming away from the family’s boat around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Searchers combed the lake until late Saturday, started again Sunday and stopped when heavy rains struck at about 4 p.m.

As personnel were wrapping up, an N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission officer found the teen’s body, the release stated.

The Sheriff’s Office thanked the North Chatham Fire Department, Alamance County Rescue, FirstHealth EMS, Chatham County Emergency Management, the Wildlife Resources Commission and North Carolina State Parks for helping.
