Multiple people injured, including firefighter, in fire at Durham apartment complex

Firefighters responded to a major blaze Sunday morning at a Durham apartment complex, where multiple people were transported to the hospital and at least one person jumped from the building to escape.

The Durham Fire Department was dispatched to the 3600 block of University Drive just before 11 a.m. and found “heavy fire conditions,” Durham Deputy Fire Chief Chris Iannuzzi said in a statement.

First responders quickly rescued one resident from a first floor window, and four other occupants escaped on their own, including one who jumped from a window. Firefighters also rescued a dog from the apartment building, Iannuzzi said.

Seven people were injured and five were transported to the hospital — one of which was a firefighter with non-life-threatening injuries. It’s unclear what condition the other four occupants are in.

The windy conditions in Durham on Sunday made it difficult for firefighters to control the blaze, Iannuzzi said, and first responders called a third alarm after about 15 minutes. About 75 firefighters were on scene to fight the blaze, including units from Durham County and Chapel Hill. Representatives from the American Red Cross also assisted first responders during the call.

The fire was declared under control around noon, Iannuzzi said.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire, but Iannuzzi said the building’s severe damage and structural instability is hindering that investigation.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
