Frontier Airlines announces two new nonstops from RDU, including one to Mexico
Frontier Airlines will begin flying nonstop from Raleigh-Durham International Airport to Cancun, Mexico, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, next spring, the airline announced Thursday.
Frontier says it will fly once a week to and from Cancun starting March 7. The Fort Lauderdale flights will take place four days a week, starting April 2.
In both cases, the low-cost carrier will have plenty of competition.
Three other airlines — American, Delta and, starting this month, Aeromexico — fly nonstop between RDU and Cancun. Frontier will become the fifth airline to serve Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport from the Triangle, after Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and Spirit.
The new flights come as Frontier is overhauling its service. It now offers what it calls UpFront Plus seating, with extra leg and elbow room and a guaranteed empty middle seat in the front of the plane. It will roll out first-class seating early next year.
Frontier was once the fastest-growing airline at RDU, but over the last year its business has actually declined about 10% as it eliminated some nonstops. With the addition of Cancun and Fort Lauderdale, the carrier will now fly to 19 destinations from the Triangle.
