The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deaths of a man and woman found dead with gunshot wounds the night of Nov. 6.

The Sheriff’s Office released the names of the victims Wednesday — Jennifer Scott, 50, and Jeffrey Michael Scott, 54. They lived off Effie Welch Road in Bear Creek, an unincorporated community 15 miles southwest of Pittsboro.

Deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on Nov. 6 at 10:24 p.m., after a resident at the address texted a family member expressing fear during an argument, the Sheriff’s Office wrote in its Wednesday statement.

The Sheriff’s Office did not identify which resident sent the text but said no one else besides Jennifer and Jeffrey Scott were in the home at the time.

Deputies walked the perimeter of the home before peering through a window and seeing two bodies on the floor, the Sheriff’s Office wrote. Upon forcing entry, they discovered Jennifer and Jeffrey Scott on the floor — both with apparent gunshot wounds — and a firearm nearby.

The Sheriff’s Office is still investigating but said there is no active threat to the public.
