Triangle travelers can now fly nonstop to six cities in New England. By December, it will be eight.

Breeze Airways announced Tuesday that it will begin flying nonstop between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on Dec. 11. That’s about a month after the low-cost carrier will begin nonstop service between RDU and Manchester, the state’s largest city.

Portsmouth is on the coast, about an hour north of Boston on Interstate 95 and slightly closer to Portland, Maine. The RDU flights will operate two days a week, Thursdays and Sundays, and continue year round.

Breeze Airways is the fastest-growing airline at RDU. Portsmouth is its 30th nonstop destination from the Triangle, more than any other carrier. Through June, Breeze served nearly twice as many RDU passengers as it did during the same period last year.

Breeze already flies from RDU to five New England cities: Portland, Providence, Hartford, New Haven and Burlington, Vermont. The Manchester flights begin Nov. 6.

The airline’s growth has given Triangle travelers more nonstop options than ever. Airlines now offer flights to a record 81 nonstop destinations from RDU, including 14 international cities.

Breeze made its debut at RDU in early 2023, with service to three cities. Its success at RDU means that it has not had to discontinue flights once it introduces them. The carrier has canceled only one route from the Triangle, to Las Vegas, where it had competition from Delta and Southwest.

The Triangle has been a good fit for the airline, says Lukas Johnson, the chief commercial officer.

“It’s a tremendously fast-growing region. Well-educated, high-income people who have moved here for jobs,” Johnson said in an interview. “It’s just been a fantastic growth story.”
