What would make it easier to get around Clayton? Town begins first transportation plan
Johnston County’s largest town is putting together its first comprehensive plan for roads, sidewalks, public transit and bike lanes.
Clayton’s population has doubled over the last 20 years, to about 30,000 people, and getting around isn’t as easy as it used to be. The town previously adopted a 2011 countywide transportation plan but now needs one of its own, said spokesman Nathanael Shelton.
“With the unprecedented growth we’ve seen over the past decade, we need a plan that is specific to the needs of Clayton,” Shelton wrote in an email.
To get started, the town is asking residents to fill out an online survey by Dec. 16. It asks what types of transportation projects the town should prioritize and includes an interactive map where people can pinpoint places around town and write what they think needs improving.
The survey also asks if people would walk, cycle or take transit more if the town invested in those types of transportation.
The town calls the plan Clayton on the Move, and it will be used to guide transportation projects over the next 20 to 30 years. The town will share the plan with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, which make many of the decisions about what to build and when.
Clayton on the Move will also incorporate projects and priorities outlined in existing town plans for pedestrians and downtown and town-wide development. A draft should be finished by early next year, with a final version going to the town council by year’s end.

In addition to the survey, town planners will appear at events throughout the fall to promote Clayton on the Move and hear from people directly.
