News & Observer breaking news photo including an ambulance
A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 40 near Wade Avenue in Raleigh on Monday.

Westbound Interstate 40 was closed for several hours near the Wade Avenue interchange Monday morning after a woman was struck and killed on the highway.

Police say the woman was standing in the center lane and facing oncoming traffic at about 5:15 a.m. She was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

Police say it appears the driver of the pickup was going the speed limit and could not stop or avoid hitting the woman. Police say they have not cited the driver but that their investigation is not complete.

The collision prompted police to close westbound I-40 for nearly four hours during the morning commute.

Police have not released any additional information about the woman who was killed, including her name.
