Crime in Glenwood South: Here’s how many people have been shot there this year

Glenwood South is known for its day-to-night transformation from an urban neighborhood packed with local businesses to a hub of nightlife and after-hours partying, a characteristic that can often be associated with crime and violence.

But despite Glenwood’s reputation as a potentially high crime area, gun violence is uncommon. This year, four people have been shot in Glenwood South, according to Raleigh police.

On June 11, two men and one minor were shot near the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and West North Street shortly before 2 a.m. All three sustained non-life-threatening injuries and survived the shooting, according to police.

On July 30, a man was shot on the 500 block of Glenwood Avenue just after 1 a.m.

In May, North Carolina first lady Kristin Cooper questioned the “vibrancy” of the Glenwood South district after a man tried to kick in the door of her and Gov. Roy Cooper’s private home.

Cooper’s comments about the nightlife district were raised during a Raleigh City Council meeting in May by resident Woody Biggs, who’s been asking leaders to address crime and noise in Glenwood South for months.

“We have had noise issues for years. The crime issues seem to have escalated greatly in the last two years,” Biggs said in an interview with The News & Observer in May.

“Before the last 12 months I never heard about gunfire in Glenwood South,” he continued. “Now every month I am hearing about gunfire going off in Glenwood South. And if you don’t speak up nothing changes.”

Guns have been fired on other occasions this year near Glenwood South, such as during a shooting on April 16 at Gramercy Apartments that later led to the arrest of a former NC State football player. No one was injured.

On July 22, one person was shot near Glenwood South on the 700 block of Peace Street and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Although crimes like these occurred near Glenwood, they happened just outside the borders of Raleigh’s Hospitality District.

In 2023 there have been 13 homicides in Raleigh — none of which occurred in Glenwood South, according to police.
