Chatham County parents charged after infant overdoses on fentanyl, morphine
The parents of an infant have been charged with several felony child abuse offenses after the 11-month-old suffered a fentanyl overdose, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Hally Scotton, 21, was arrested Friday and Brian Lavariega, 24, was arrested on June 6. Both are from Siler City.
Scotton was given a $150,000 bond and Lavariega received a $25,000 bond in the Chatham County Detention Center.
The charges stem from an April 22, 2022 incident in which Scotton’s and Lavariega’s infant was hospitalized due to an unknown health condition.
Scotton and Lavariega allegedly didn’t explain to medical staff the cause of the condition, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Medical staff determined through tests that the infant was suffering from an overdose of fentanyl, norfentanyl and morphine, consistent with “street heroin,” authorities said.
The baby was given naloxone, a medicine to treat an opioid overdose, to save her life.
Each parent has been charged with felony child abuse -- neglect, serious bodily injury, felony intentional child abuse, serious bodily injury and misdemeanor child abuse.
Both are scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court on July 17.
