Tractor-trailer overturns in Johnston County, shuts down I-40 East lanes
Two tractor-trailers collided with each other and overturned on Interstate 40 in Johnston County Wednesday afternoon, an accident that’s expected to shut down eastbound traffic for hours, the State Highway Patrol said.
All eastbound lanes of I-40 are expected to reopen by 6 p.m., according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The eastbound side will be closed “for a significant amount of time” due to both tractor trailers overturning, Sgt. Chris Knox with the State Highway Patrol confirmed.
Traffic on the westbound side of I-40 continues to move, although at a slow pace.
Around 1:30 p.m., a tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on I-40 near exit 325 when it crossed through the median cable barrier and collided with another tractor-trailer, Knox said.
Motorists must take exit 325 and continue through the intersection to get back on I-40 East, the DOT said.
The drivers have non-life threatening injuries, according to NCDOT.
The News & Observer has requested information on any additional injuries or involved vehicles in the incident.
