Giving Tuesday is a time to consider giving back to nonprofit organizations and groups that help those in our community.

This list of organizations is by no means complete, but it represents a variety of causes that might need your time and skills, along with financial contributions.

Families Together

Families Together helps families experiencing homelessness find stable housing and connect to community resources. Join their Landlord Network if you have a place to rent, create a welcome basket with cleaning supplies or match with a family to provide holiday gifts. familiestogethernc.org

The Green Chair Project

When families are recovering from homelessness, crisis or disaster, Green Chair offers the comforts of home. Pass along your gently used home furnishings; check guidelines for donations first. thegreenchair.org

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity partners with local corporations, individuals, congregations and community groups to build safe, affordable homes with local families. There are chapters in Wake County (habitatwake.org), Orange County (habitatoc.org) and Durham (durhamhabitat.org).

Haven House Services

Haven House operates 11 youth programs, including Wrenn House, the Triangle’s only emergency shelter for youth ages 10-17 experiencing homelessness and/or a crisis. Brighten a child or teen’s holiday by adopting a family and shopping for gifts. havenhousenc.org

Healing Transitions

Healing Transitions is a non-profit organization that provides peer-to-peer recovery services to homeless and underserved individuals with alcoholism and other substance use disorders. There’s a men’s campus and a women’s campus tailored to serve their unique needs. The group is the only long-term, peer-based recovery program in Wake County. healing-transitions.org

Note in the Pocket

The organization helps poor and homeless children in Wake County by making sure they have clothes. Children receive two weeks’ worth of clothes in their specific sizes. Clothing of all kind is needed, but check the wish lists for most needed items. noteinthepocket.org

Oak City Cares

Oak City Cares helps the homeless by addresses housing, as well as basic needs services like showers, laundry and meals. oakcitycares.org

Raleigh Rescue Mission

This non-profit organization is dedicated to those experiencing homelessness in our community. More than 750,000 men, women and children have been assisted in the almost 60 years that this group has been serving the city of Raleigh. The Women’s Center

The Women’s Center is a multi-service crisis intervention and assessment center, located in downtown Raleigh. The organization provides a safe, low barrier, client-centered and trauma informed environment for women, where they can begin the stabilization and healing process. wcwc.org/get-involved

A Place at the Table

This sunny, downtown café, Raleigh’s first pay-what-you-can restaurant, nurtures community by serving delicious food to all — regardless of ability to pay. tableraleigh.org

Farmer Foodshare

Farmer Foodshare supports struggling farms by purchasing their produce and selling it to markets, restaurants and more. farmerfoodshare.org

Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina

One of North Carolina’s largest food banks is collecting donations, dry and shelf-stable foods and asking for volunteers. For more ways to help, visit foodbankcenc.org.

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle

The Food Shuttle fights hunger, in all its manifestations. Lead a community health education class, organize a food drive or check to see if your local elementary school has a Backpack Buddies program that you can support financially or as a volunteer. foodshuttle.org

Marian Cheek Jackson Center: Heavenly Groceries

Heavenly Groceries/Comida Celestial is a certified food bank and ministry of St. Joseph CME Church, dedicated to providing quality produce and grocery items to the under-served communities in and surrounding Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Donate time, money and/or items. jacksoncenter.info

Meals on Wheels Wake County

Meals on Wheels Wake County serves 1,300 noontime meals every weekday to homebound older adults and people with disabilities in Wake County. Our outreach consists of hot meals to homebound individuals, communal dining for adults 60+ at our Friendship Cafes, and frozen meal service for dialysis patients and other homebound individuals in isolated areas. Over 2,200 volunteers help us deliver meals Monday through Friday each week. wakemow.org/donate

NC Hunters for the Hungry

Licensed hunters can donate legally harvested deer (overpopulated in N.C.) to be processed for meat at state-inspected facilities. Then nutrient-rich venison burgers are distributed to people experiencing hunger. nchuntersforthehungry.org

North Raleigh Ministries

North Raleigh Ministries provides a pantry where people in need can shop for groceries at no cost. They need financial donations to stock their cupboards/freezers. northraleighministries.com

PORCH Communities

PORCH Communities fights hunger and food insecurity through neighbors helping neighbors. Since 2010, local PORCH chapters have run food collections to fill the gaps in the food bank system. You can donate food, donate money and/or volunteer your time. porchcommunities.org/get-involved

Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen

The Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen in Raleigh needs financial donations to ensure that people who are struggling can receive food and make it through each day. shepherds-table.org

TABLE

TABLE is a non-profit organization that provides hunger relief and nutrition education services to children living in Orange County. You can donate financially, give food and/or volunteer. tablenc.org

Antioch Builds Community

ABC is a community-based organization committed to identifying needs in the Durham community and responding with compassion through collaboration, support and education. Bridge the Gap Mission

Lutheran Family Services Resettlement Help

LFS welcomes refugees and immigrants and facilitates housing, health screenings and school enrollment. Join a “Circle of Welcome” to help families who have just arrived to the area. Volunteers are needed, and so are food pantry/household items. lscarolinas.net/donate.

Urban Ministries Of Wake County and Durham

Western Wake Crisis Ministry

Founded in March 2013, Carolina Jews for Justice combines advocacy and education to organize a non-partisan Jewish voice for justice in North Carolina. Through their free, intensive software development training, people from diverse low-income backgrounds can build useful apps to launch new careers. Pass along your coding prowess by volunteering as a teacher or mentor, or just contribute to the Durham organization. codethedream.org

This program empowers students to stay in school and graduate. Become part of a student’s community by signing up as a youth mentor or volunteering in an after-school center. ciswake.org

StepUp Ministry

StepUp Ministry is currently offering Employment Training and Placement and Life Skills programs through virtual platforms. Me Fine Foundation

National Alliance on Mental Illness: North Carolina

The V Foundation

Former NC State head coach Jim Valvano began the V Foundation upon getting diagnosed with metastatic adenocarcinoma in 1993. This charity aims to achieve victory over cancer. Donations fund breakthrough cancer research and are 100% tax deductible. v.org

Animal Kind

Beyond Fences delivers free services, supplies, information and support to people and their pets. The SPCA of Wake County (SPCA Wake) is a nonprofit organization helping pets and people in over half of the counties across NC through collaborative partnerships. Saving Grace

Saving Grace visits shelters across North Carolina to find adoptable dogs that just need a “second chance.” Animals come from areas with extremely limited resources where euthanasia rates are high. savinggracenc.org

SAFE Haven for Cats

SAFE Haven for Cats is Raleigh’s no-kill shelter that also operates a low-cost spay/neuter clinic.
