Raleigh woman fatally struck while helping others who crashed in Durham, police say
A Raleigh woman died early Sunday morning after she was hit by an SUV while trying to help people trapped in their car after a Durham crash.
Jasmine Harbison, 29, was killed on South Miami Boulevard shortly after 2:30 a.m., according to a Durham Police Department news release.
She and her boyfriend had stopped to help the occupants of a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, who were trapped in their car after it collided with a 2018 Nissan Maxima.
They had been pulling out of a parking lot when the crash occurred, and the Equinox had flipped onto its right side.
Police said Harbison was standing beside the overturned car when a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox SUV traveling north on the road struck her.
She died at the scene, according to officials.
Police said alcohol and speed were factors in the first collision, but that alcohol was not believed to have been involved in the fatal crash.
Those in the 2011 Equinox that crashed first and the driver of the 2010 Equinox that struck Harbison were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to the release.
The News & Observer has asked Durham police if charges will be filed in connection to the death, and for more information about how the crashes occurred.
