Here are the final candidates running for election for Durham mayor and City Council
Voters in Durham will see a crowded field this fall battling for City Council seats, as well as a one-on-one matchup in the race for mayor.
The 2019 municipal primary for three at-large City Council seats will be Oct. 8, with the top six candidates advancing to the Nov. 5 general election The race for mayor will be settled in the general election.
The mayor’s term is for two years, while the three at-large City Council seats will be for four-year terms.
Voters also will decide on a $95 million bond referendum on Nov. 5 to address affordable housing needs in Durham.
Mayor Steve Schewel, who is seeking his second term, will face off against Sylvester Williams. Williams, a retired financial advisor, also ran in 2017, coming in a distant fourth in the primary election.
The field for the City Council seats stands at 10. The primary ballot includes incumbents Jillian Johnson, Charlie Reece and Javiera Caballero. Johnson, who is the mayor pro tem, and Reece were elected in 2015, while Caballero was appointed in 2018 to fill Schewel’s unexpired term when he became mayor.
Charlitta Burruss, Ricardo Correa, Joshua Gunn, Daniel Meier, Victoria Peterson, John Tarantino and Jackie Wagstaff are the challengers.
Absentee-by-mail voting begins Sept. 6 for the October municipal primary, with voter registration ending for this election Sept. 13. One-stop early voting runs Sept. 18-Oct. 4.
Residents of Chapel Hill, who live in Durham County, will vote for mayor and select four at-large City Council members on Nov. 5.
Morrisville residents who live in Durham County will vote for four City Council seats in District 1, District 2, District 3 and a Council Member At-Large on Nov. 5.
Residents in the eastern part of the county will vote in the Raleigh elections for mayor and City Council on Oct. 8. They will select a District E council member and two at-large members. If a runoff is necessary, it will happen Nov. 5.
