Cary pellet-gun shooting suspect also had explosive device, police say

An 18-year-old accused of shooting two pellet guns at a Cary bookstore on Friday night also had an explosive device, according to the town’s police.

Jonathan Kyle Courtney, of Cary, is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault with a deadly weapon, malicious assault in secret, and possessing a weapon of mass destruction.

Police said Courtney had an “improvised explosive device” the same day he is accused of walking into the Barnes & Noble bookstore on Southeast Maynard Road and shooting “indiscriminately” with pellet guns.

A man and woman were taken to WakeMed with minor injuries, according to a previous report in The News & Observer.

Courtney assaulted two people with an air rifle and three with an air pistol, intending to kill them, according to his arrest warrants. Three of the accusers were “neither aware of the defendant’s presence nor his purpose to commit the assault,” the documents say.

Courtney was arrested Friday when he tried to leave the shopping area, according to police. His bond was set at $560,000, court records show.
