Wegmans announces plans for a fifth grocery store in the Triangle

Wegmans is coming to Wake Forest.

The popular grocery retailer has plans to build a store on the N.C. 98 bypass between Capital Boulevard and Siena Drive in Wake Forest, Wegmans said in a news release Thursday.

Wegmans has signed a purchase agreement for the property and is seeking municipal approvals to build an anchor store as part of a larger mixed-use development by the real estate firm Stiles Corp., the release said.

The store is expected to be around 100,000 square feet. No timeline has been given for the project, according to the news release.

The news was first reported by ABC11.

Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans is in the middle of a large expansion into the North Carolina market. The chain, which is steadily expanding down the East Coast, has already announced plans to build stores in Chapel Hill, Raleigh and two in Cary.

In recent weeks, the company said it has downsized plans for one of the Cary stores.

In the news release, Wegmans said it was “grateful for the opportunity to bring incredible customer service, restaurant-quality prepared foods, and consistent low prices to Wake Forest in the future.”

“We look forward to the day when we can greet new customers and welcome back those who have shopped with us in other areas before,” Ralph Uttaro, senior vice president of real estate for Wegmans, said in a statement.
