A Pennsylvania health department is investigating reported coronavirus cases after residents have visited South Carolina beach towns.
The state is the latest in a string of areas to report coronavirus cases tied back to trips to South Carolina.
Allegheny County’s health department stated in a news release that it is investigating 712 new coronavirus cases that were confirmed during the last week of June. Some of them are from people who reported they recently traveled to areas including Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head. Other destinations listed include Miami, Raleigh, North Carolina, Tampa, Florida, and Nashville, Tennessee, the release states.
These locations came up most often when health department officials were interviewing those with positive cases, according to the release.
Allegheny County is home to Pittsburgh.
This week, the City of Myrtle Beach, the city of North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown County were the first areas along the Grand Strand to pass mandatory face masks ordinances. The new ordinances come as cases in the Horry County and Myrtle Beach areas continue to soar, with health officials announcing new cases daily in the triple digits.
Horry County has had more than 3,700 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since mid-March, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. The county has had 49 deaths due to the coronavirus, DHEC reports.
Cases in Georgetown County climbed past 500 and three virus-related deaths have been reported.
