Need more living space during quarantine? This NC city is the place to be, report says
When it comes to living space during quarantine, residents in this North Carolina city have it best, a report found.
The report, by Point2Homes, analyzed the 50 largest U.S. cities based on median lot sizes and living areas to find which offer the most space to move around while stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic.
Raleigh came in at No. 1.
North Carolina, and other states across the country, have enacted stay-at-home orders, restricting their residents’ movement to only essential activities. This means many are spending much more time at home than usual.
For those who want some fresh air without leaving home, Raleigh has the largest median lot size of all 50 cities, at 15,682 square feet, the report found. Next in line is Virginia Beach, with a median lot size of 13,503.
In terms of indoor living space, Raleigh ranked No. 2, with a median of 2,451 square feet, behind only Colorado Springs, which has a median of 2,930 square feet.
The report used data from Point2Homes and PropertyShark to find the median lot sizes and living areas. Residential properties, including houses, single-family homes, duplexes, mobile homes, condos and townhomes were included in the analysis. However, lot sizes for condos and townhomes were not considered. Manhattan was not included as data on lot size wasn’t available, the report says.
Charlotte also ranked among cities with the most spacious living situations.
The city was No. 5 in terms of lot size, with a median of 11,325 square feet, and No. 8 in terms of living area size, with a median of 2,128 square feet.
North Carolina recently ranked among the top states for working from home in a different report. The report, from WalletHub, used labor, utilities and housing data and found the state ranked No. 9 in terms of job and living conditions that impact workers who are not in the office, McClatchy News reported.
The Point2Homes report also ranked the cities with the least amount of space to move around.
Brooklyn, New York claimed the No 1. spot for the smallest lot sizes, with 2,250 square feet, and Boston claimed the top spot in terms of small living spaces, with a median of 1,127 square feet.
Overall, cities with lower population densities ranked higher in terms of lot sizes, the report says. Raleigh has a population density of 3,235 while Charlotte’s is 2,850.
