One of the region’s top tech executives is selling his 8,019-square-foot “modern showpiece” in Durham.

Epic Games chief financial officer Randy Gelber and his wife, Debra Beth, have listed their “one-of-a-kind” home (think: walnut slat interior walls and retractable screen windows) at 3322 Devon Rd. in Durham. Built in 2022, it sits on 1.02 acres in the Hope Valley Country Club neighborhood, about a 12-minute drive southwest of downtown Durham.

The estate includes a 5,851-square-foot “main house” with seven bedrooms and seven and a half bathrooms. A few steps away, a 2,168-square-foot outhouse offers a gym, office and sauna.

The buyer also gets access to a four-car garage, in-ground trampoline, basketball court, “infinity-edge” pool and outdoor kitchen.

“There’s simply no home in the Triangle, or all of North Carolina, that has the detail and high-end finishings,” said listing agent Mary Hunter, a Realtor with Urban Durham Realty.

It even comes with its own website: www.3322devon.com.

And an eye-popping price tag: $7.995 million. Or roughly $997 per square foot.

“We’ve had a tremendous response,” Hunter added. “We’ve had over 8,000 views on Zillow alone.” A recent tour of the house by NC Modernist drew “over 250 physical visitors in a single day,” she said.

The Gelbers worked with architect Louis Cherry, builder Tripp Loyd and landscape architect Walter Havener, all based in Raleigh, to build their home.

Since 2019, Gelber has worked for Cary-based Epic Games, the maker of the wildly popular Fortnite video game. As of July 2024, the company is valued at nearly $29 billion.

Gelber started as its chief strategy officer and a year later stepped up as its chief financial officer, a position he still holds based on his LinkedIn account.

According to Hunter, the couple is relocating to Miami to be closer to family.

Durham’s market

The Gelbers’ listing is the priciest in Durham. The second priciest is a new-build 8,931-square-foot mansion at 282 Colvard Estates Dr. listed for $6.9 million.

As mortgage rates slowly come down, the Durham housing market remains very competitive.

The median sale price (mid-way point for all house prices) was $420,000 in August, down 1.2% since last year, Redfin found.

The median sale price per square foot is $233, down 0.43% since last year.

Homes receive two offers on average and sell in around 21 days compared to 35 days last year.
