A longtime destination for outdoor gear is set to open a second store in the Triangle.

Apex Outfitter and Board Company is expanding its footprint to a popular retail and entertainment area.

“We’re excited to announce that Apex Outfitter is coming to downtown Cary, NC in fall 2026 — bringing the same locally owned, community-first experience to a new corner of the Triangle, the company wrote on its website.

Here’s what we know about Apex Outfitter and its plans for the new store.

Where will the new store open?

Apex Outfitter started in 2012 in Apex, a suburb southwest of Raleigh. The business calls itself the “Triangle’s go-to outfitter for trail runners, paddlers, skaters, hikers, and anyone who’d rather be outside.”

Now, the store hopes to sell clothes, shoes and outdoor equipment to customers in downtown Cary. The new 1,800-square-foot space will be on the ground level of the parking garage at 136 E. Cedar St., the Triangle Business Journal first reported.

“I think downtown Cary is definitely underserved when it comes to retail. There is some new retail down there, but I think the community has really, really wanted more retail,” Owner Kyle Denis told the news outlet.

Adding to the location’s appeal were the nearby Downtown Cary Park, “excellent restaurant scene, and the upcoming high-density residential developments,” Denis told The News & Observer in a Wednesday, June 17 email. The new shop is expected to open in October and will still carry the name Apex Outfitter.

“We will share more details soon but we can’t wait to jump into the community and bring the same great service we have been providing in Apex for the past 14 years,” the store wrote Friday, June 12 on social media.

Other Apex Outfitter locations

Apex Outfitter has expanded in the past. The store opened a location in downtown Raleigh in 2018. But that shop was damaged during 2020 protests over the death of George Floyd and later closed, according to Facebook posts from the business and a photo from The N&O.

Apex Outfitter’s flagship store is located at 225 N. Salem St. in downtown Apex, an area currently undergoing a renovation project. The shop plans to continue operating its original storefront.
