Crabtree Valley Mall retailers have weeks to leave
Last week, The News & Observer reported that about a dozen operators of retail merchandising units — the portable carts that line the hallways of Crabtree Valley Mall — will have to leave by the end of September.
Some of those small business owners, including Dana Avitan, who runs the Hair Sensations RMU, have been based at Crabtree for years.
In a statement emailed to The N&O, senior specialty leasing manager Drew Dunzweiler said the changes are part of a “reimagining” of common spaces, making “a more open and vibrant environment that enhances traffic flow, improves space utilization, and allows for the introduction of exciting new retail, dining, and entertainment offerings for our guests and the community.”
Earlier this year, the California-based real estate investment trust Macerich Co. purchased the mall and announced a $60 million renovation plan, bringing upgrades across the property.
In the statement, Dunzweiler encouraged shoppers to continue supporting the RMUs “beyond our walls.” But a couple of RMU operators who spoke with The N&O said they are low on options for where to turn next.
ABC store in downtown Raleigh
Downtown Raleigh is set to get its first ABC store in decades.
Wake County Alcoholic Beverage Control general manager Bryan Hicks confirmed to The N&O that that the store at 209 S. Salisbury St. is on the way.
Look for an opening sometime in the next few weeks.
This will be downtown Raleigh’s first liquor store since 1985, when the store at 335 S. Wilmington St. closed.
Beer and wine is available at many grocery stores and retail shops, but in North Carolina, liquor including vodka, tequila, gin, rum and whisky can only be purchased at ABC stores.
