A popular gas station chain known for its sandwiches is opening soon in the Triangle.

Wawa, a privately held company with locations in 11 states and Washington, D.C., will open its first Johnston County store in July.

“We are excited to continue our expansion into North Carolina with our first store in Johnston County,” Kim Dowgielewicz, Wawa’s director of store operations, said in a press release. “We look forward to continuing to bring our unique brand of fresh food, beverages and convenience to new areas and to further our commitment to providing the community with not only a new level of convenience but a strong, committed community partner.”

Here’s what we know about one of North Carolina’s newest Wawa stores.

When will Wawa open in the Triangle?

Wawa will open at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 24. A grand-opening event scheduled for that day will feature a ribbon cutting at 8:30 a.m.

The store will be at 55 Masonboro Drive in Johnston County, near the busy Interstate 40 and N.C. 42 intersection.

Wawa stores in NC

On Wednesday, July 23, Wawa will open its third Greenville store.

With the new Johnston County location, the brand will have a dozen North Carolina locations, and it plans to open an additional five stores by the end of the year, including its first Travel Center in Hope Mills, the company said in a press release.

Wawa has submitted plans to open a location in Selma, at 25 JR Road near Highway 70 and Interstate 95, The News & Observer previously reported, along with a store at 4800 N.C. 42, near Son-Lan Parkway. Both are in Johnston County.

The company wants to open between six and eight stores each year in North Carolina for the next eight to 10 years, totaling 90 stores in the state.

Each store will employ about 35 associates once open, Wawa said in the press release. To apply for a job at Wawa, visit careers.wawa.com.

Buc-ee’s coming to NC

Wawa isn’t the only gas station chain known for its large selection of food and drinks that’s expanding in North Carolina.

Texas-based Buc-ee’s, popular for its ample clean bathrooms, barbecue and Beaver Nuggets, is also coming. But one site, in Mebane, has generated controversy. Critics say the 120-pump gas station could pollute air and water and harm historic Native American trading paths that served the Catawba, Occaneechi and Waxhaw.
